Trading Psychology and Revenge Trading: Controlling Fear and Greed

Trading psychology is how emotions such as fear, greed, hope and frustration affect your trading decisions. Many traders know the technical side well but still lose money because they cannot follow their own plan under pressure. This applies equally to stocks, crypto and forex.

The emotions that hurt traders most

  • Fear: exiting good trades too early, or not taking valid trades after a few losses.
  • Greed: risking too much, or holding too long hoping for more.
  • Hope: refusing to accept a loss and moving the stop loss further away.
  • FOMO (fear of missing out): chasing a share or coin after it has already jumped.

What is revenge trading?

Revenge trading means jumping into a new trade straight after a loss, trying to win the money back quickly. It is usually driven by frustration, not by analysis, and it often leads to larger positions and bigger losses. In Urdu terms, it is trading ghusse mein, out of anger.

Habits that help

  • Write your trading plan before the market opens, and follow it.
  • Set a daily or weekly loss limit, and stop when you reach it.
  • Keep position sizes small enough that a loss does not upset you. See risk management.
  • Keep a journal of trades and of how you felt when you took them.
  • Accept that losses are a normal cost of trading. No one wins every trade.

Unrealistic expectations

Expecting to double your money quickly puts pressure on every trade. Traders who aim for steady learning and controlled risk usually make better decisions than those chasing fast profits.
