Paper Trading and Demo Trading: How to Practise Without Real Money

Paper trading means practising trades on paper or in a spreadsheet, without real money. Demo trading means practising on a simulated account inside a trading platform or app. Both let you learn how markets move and test your skills before risking your own savings.

Why practise first?

  • You learn to read charts and place orders without the pressure of real losses.
  • You find out which approaches suit your personality and schedule.
  • You build habits, such as always setting a stop loss, before money is at stake.

How to paper trade

  1. Choose a share, coin or currency pair and study its chart.
  2. Write down your planned entry, stop loss, target and position size.
  3. Record what actually happens over the following days.
  4. Review the results each week: what worked, and what mistakes repeated.

Demo accounts

Many forex and crypto platforms offer demo accounts. For PSX, some brokers and research apps provide virtual portfolios or simulators. A demo account shows you how orders, prices and charts behave on the actual platform.

The limits of practice

Practice is not the same as real trading. With no real money at risk, fear and greed are much weaker, so decisions feel easier. When you move to real money, start small, and expect your emotions to play a bigger part. See trading psychology.
