Stock Market Myths: Is the Stock Market Gambling?

Many people in Pakistan avoid the stock market, or enter it with the wrong ideas, because of common myths. Here are five of the most common, and what is really true.

Myth 1: “The stock market is gambling”

Gambling outcomes are pure chance. Buying a share means owning part of a real business, with real profits, assets and dividends. Prices do move unpredictably in the short term, and trading without knowledge or a plan can feel like gambling. But informed investing and disciplined trading, with risk management, are very different from betting.

Myth 2: “The stock market is only for brokers and rich people”

Anyone with a CNIC and a bank account can open an account, often online, and some brokers allow small starting amounts. See PSX account opening online.

Myth 3: “A share near its 52-week low must be a bargain”

A share is often low for a reason: falling profits, debt or poor prospects. A low price alone is not a reason to buy. Shares in a downtrend can keep falling.

Myth 4: “What goes up must come down”

Strong companies can keep rising for years as their profits grow. Selling a good share just because it has risen can mean missing the rest of the move.

Myth 5: “A little knowledge is better than none”

A little knowledge can create false confidence: enough to take big positions, but not enough to manage the risk. Learning the basics properly, and practising with paper or demo trading, is safer than learning with real losses.

Realistic expectations

The stock market can help savings grow over time, but there are no guaranteed returns, and losses are part of the process. Anyone promising quick, certain profits should be treated with caution.
