Technical Analysis for Beginners: One Skill for Stocks, Crypto and Forex

Technical analysis is the skill of reading price charts to understand what buyers and sellers are doing, and to plan trades with clear entries, exits and risk. Its biggest advantage is that it is universal: a chart is a chart. The same trends, support and resistance, candlesticks and indicators appear on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), on cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, on forex pairs like EUR/USD, and on gold or oil. Learn it once and you can apply it to any live market.

Why technical analysis works across markets

Every market is made of people buying and selling, driven by the same fear and greed. That behaviour leaves the same footprints on a chart, whatever is being traded. What changes between markets is mainly:

  • Trading hours: PSX trades on weekdays; crypto trades around the clock; forex trades around the clock on weekdays.
  • Volatility: crypto usually moves much faster than shares, so stop losses and position sizes must reflect that.
  • Leverage and costs: forex and crypto platforms often offer high leverage, which magnifies both gains and losses.

The method of reading the chart stays the same.

The building blocks

  1. Price and candlesticks: reading each candle and common candlestick patterns.
  2. Trend: knowing whether the market is going up, down or sideways. See how to identify a trend.
  3. Support and resistance: the levels where price tends to turn. See support and resistance explained.
  4. Chart patterns: shapes such as double tops and triangles that hint at the next move. See chart patterns and how to trade them.
  5. Indicators: tools such as EMA, RSI, MACD and Supertrend that summarise trend and momentum.
  6. Fibonacci and volume: estimating pullbacks with Fibonacci retracement and confirming moves with volume.
  7. Risk management: the part that keeps you in the game. See stop loss and risk management rules.

Timeframes

The same techniques work on any timeframe, from 15-minute charts for short-term trades to daily and weekly charts for longer positions. A good habit is to check the trend on a higher timeframe first, then look for entries on a lower one.

What technical analysis cannot do

It does not predict the future with certainty. It helps you find situations where the odds are more in your favour, and to define in advance what you will do if you are wrong. Without risk management, even good analysis loses money.
