Triple Top and Triple Bottom Patterns Explained

Triple Top (bearish reversal) chart pattern diagram

The triple top and triple bottom are reversal patterns where price tests the same level three times and fails to break it. They are less common than double tops and bottoms, but the extra test can make the level more significant. They appear on stock, crypto and forex charts.

Triple top (bearish)

Price reaches roughly the same high three times, pulling back after each attempt. A line through the lows between the peaks forms the support or neckline. The pattern is generally considered complete when price closes below that support, suggesting the uptrend may have ended.

Triple bottom (bullish)

Price falls to roughly the same low three times and holds each time. A close above the highs between the lows suggests the downtrend may have ended.

Triple top vs range

Three touches of the same high can also simply be the top of a sideways range. The difference is what happens next: the triple top is only confirmed when support breaks. Until then, price may keep moving sideways, or even break upwards.

What beginners should keep in mind

  • The pattern needs a clear prior trend.
  • Higher volume on the break adds confidence.
  • These patterns take time to form, usually on daily charts or above.
