V-Shape Reversal and Inverted V Pattern Explained

V-Shape Reversal (bullish) chart pattern diagram

A V-shape reversal is a sudden, sharp turn: price falls steeply and then rises just as steeply, forming a “V” on the chart. The inverted V is the opposite, a sharp rise followed by a sharp fall. These reversals happen on shares, crypto and forex, often after surprising news or extreme fear or excitement.

V-shape (bullish)

A steep sell-off, often driven by panic, is followed by an equally fast recovery as buyers rush back in. There is little or no sideways movement at the bottom.

Inverted V (bearish)

A sharp rally, often driven by excitement or hype, suddenly reverses into a steep fall. It is common after speculative spikes (see bump and run).

Why V-shapes are hard to trade

  • They give very little warning; there is no slow build-up like a rounding bottom.
  • By the time the turn is obvious, much of the move may already have happened.
  • Trying to catch the exact bottom of a fast fall is very risky.

What beginners can learn from them

  • Markets can turn faster than expected, which is why a stop loss matters on every trade.
  • Extreme moves driven by emotion often reverse sharply.
  • Waiting for some confirmation, such as a break of a short-term trendline, is usually safer than guessing the turn.
